Breaking the cycle of hopelessness and youth incarceration
Why I Am is a safe and inviting experience for youth and young adults as they embark on their journey of self-discovery to adulthood.
What we offer & Hope to see
-
Why I Am provides our participants with a bi-weekly educational program. Research shows that the development of positive character traits such as honesty, etiquette, life skills, health and fitness, and positive self-image are related to healthy youth development and progress. Our educational program integrates experiential learning, teaching, and discussion. Some of the topics we review are: forgiveness, social etiquette, life skills, financial capability, health and fitness, and career and job readiness.
In addition, Why I Am is intentional to partner with community professionals and local business owners to provide employment opportunities, industry workshops, mentorship, and guidance. Participants will gain volunteer and job experience to enhance their skill building relationships within the community.
-
Success is measured in many different ways as each youth and young adult has unique circumstances or needs. Some of the more frequent measures that Why I Am hopes to see are: achieving and maintaining healthy relationships with family and peers, high school graduation, obtaining a GED, getting their MN state ID, receiving their drivers permit and license, going into a Trade or College, securing housing, and demonstrating healthy financial skills and knowledge, including an understanding of budgeting, investing, credit and bank accounts.
-
Why I Am mentors are available to meet one to one with youth and young adults. These meetings allow them to develop a relationship with a caring adult who can provide personal support, influence, guidance, direction, and encouragement to make healthy choices amid life’s pressures. These meetings take place in casual settings.
-
Why I Am also schedules activities, trips, and service projects on a regular basis. Why I Am engages youth and young people by exposing them to outdoor experiences such as fishing, hunting, archery, boating, camping, and sporting events.
“With the continued support from our generous donors, we have been able to serve our youth and young adults better than ever.”
— Mario Gonzalez-Mitchell, Executive Director
